The Environment Award will be given to the company that, in the opinion of the judges, demonstrated the most significant and successful application of ‘Green’ processes, procedures or monitoring during the year.

BIBBY DISTRIBUTION LTD

As one of the top 10 logistics providers in the UK, Bibby Distribution is committed to reducing the carbon emissions of all elements of its operations.

The company follows an approach called Road to Zero – zero harm, zero waste, and zero environmental impact. It’s an ambitious goal, but one the team is committed to achieving, and reducing the impact of its warehouses is critical to its success.

In terms of warehousing, Bibby Distribution has looked at more than just the fabric of its buildings. The team has introduced entirely new ways of operating, incorporated the latest technology, and made smart investments that cut carbon while still delivering outstanding service for customers.

Bibby Distribution is making strong progress well on its way on the Road to Zero, reducing its carbon footprint from all areas of its business, including its warehouses.

The company’s achievements so far include:

• Slashing 250 tonnes of CO2 from a single warehouse operation by using a revolutionary new management system – a total reduction of around 20 per cent;

• Cutting building energy use by 14 per cent thanks to smart technology;

• Making intelligent investment in new property that has seen the overall carbon footprint of a single warehouse operation drop by 60 per cent.

THE PALLET NETWORK

The pallet network model aims to cut mileage and so lower the carbon footprint of pallet deliveries. TPN – The Pallet Network – embodies this carbon-sensitive approach throughout its operation which involves the cross-docking of up to 80,000 pallets a week at its hubs.

The company has applied the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle at every step. This means extensive forward planning to accommodate growth (currently at 18%) as every relocation is a waste of resource.

Measures introduced at its hubs to ensure that TPN’s operation is environmentally sustainable include:

• The use of cladding and insulation which sustains daytime temperatures without the need for heating;

• Using rainwater for all flush and cleaning systems, and using solar energy to heat water;

• The use of motion and photocell sensitive lighting that only comes on when needed;

• The introduction of showers, sheds and lockers for cyclists to encourage sustainable commuting.

WALKER LOGISTICS LTD

Walker Logistics’ environmental commitments are an integral part of the company’s day-to-day activities. Indeed, the need to reduce its carbon footprint, improve recycling, reduce reliance on packaging, minimise waste and improve the efficient use of resources, underpins all of the company’s operations and this message is communicated to staff in all departments.

In the past 12 months the company has undertaken a number of ‘green’ initiatives that demonstrate its ongoing commitment to the environment. For example, Walker Logistics is dramatically cutting the amount of waste packaging generated by its clients’ supply chains by turning inbound transit packaging waste into protective void-fill material that is used to protect outgoing orders.

The company has also switched to energy efficient lighting, which has achieved significant CO2 emissions reductions.

Walker has also reduced heating oil and transport fuel consumption and halved the amount of waste material it sends to landfill – all within the past 12 months.
