What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

Marc Calder, Managing Director, BACA Workwear & Safety Ltd

Looking at new opportunities in the market, working with the team and seeing them get excited about the opportunities as well. And ultimately seeing the final results.

Who’s inspired you most in your career?

My older brother Jim is the person who has inspired me the most. He moved to Copenhagen 15 years ago, with the support of BACA UK and and set up his own separate safety workwear business. He took that brave move and has been very successful. Now I’m MD at BACA he continues to inspire me to make the brave moves within the company, he is a mentor.

The CEO Air New Zealand Christopher Luxon also inspires me because he is always talking about the people within his company, I find him very interesting.

If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

A forklift because I am always running about all day.

If you had your career all over again, what would you do different?

I’d spend more time with people who were where I’d want to get to and plan my future. I would spend more time planning.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?

I had a training day connected to work and as an icebreaker we had to tell a story about the most embarrassing thing that had ever happened to us. I told them about when I got engaged I had to hang my banns up and I went and spoke to the receptionist at the building who said I needed to walk down the corridor and go to the last door on the left.

I got to what I thought was the last door on the left and thought this must be it as there was an engaged sign above the door, which was lit up and I walked in and there was a woman at a computer typing and a couple sat in front of her. I said I’d come to hang my banns and she said – ‘can you wait outside in the waiting room’ – I was so embarrassed as suddenly the penny dropped. I went beetroot when I left the room and closed the door. When I told that story at the training day at work everyone thought it was hilarious.

Who or what makes you laugh?

An energetic person who has a funny story and will tell it about themselves and an enthusiastic sales person who is animated, they tend to make me laugh.

It’s a business ambition, to be part of a leading European workwear supplier.

What’s your dream holiday destination?

Barcelona – it’s very relaxing there and I like the culture.

What are your three favourite movies of all time?

What is your favourite book of all time?

The Guinness Book of World Records because it shows determination.
