Aryzta, an international speciality food and bakery company, turned to Conveyor Systems Ltd (CSL) to provide a pallet conveyor system as part of an upgrade to a de-commissioned cold store at one of their UK sites. This was to bring storage back in-house, as subcontracting was an ever increasing cost.
CSL had to design, supply and install a pallet conveyor system to handle various types and weights up to 1500kg, in both cold store and ambient conditions. Part of the challenge was to work within the restrictions of the existing site layout.
Due to the step in building heights between the cold store and ambient area, the system consisting of dual 12m long lanes had to be supported on a 1000mmH steel structure. The criteria was to store pallets in the – 25°C cold store and deliver into an ambient +8°C lobby area ready for loading onto refrigerated trailers.
As part of the control function and to overcome possible condensation issues, CSL employed specially designed sensor rollers instead of photo electric cells to detect a pallet presence and provide a non-contact accumulation conveyor system. As the conveyor was reversible, two sensor rollers were used within each zone.
A main control panel was sited away in the control room, with a remote HMI positioned close to the ambient Lobby area. A second remote panel was located within the cold store for dual function control.
CSL worked and integrated with other suppliers to provide a turnkey solution, interfacing with an Air Curtain system and rapid shutter door. These interfaces were critical to ensuring pallets were discharged in a sequenced and controlled manner, whilst maintaining the cold store temperature.
