Andy Lomax (Director, Maxim Product Solutions Ltd.) explains how Rapitainer can provide significant savings to businesses.

Though tall, Rapitainer’s drop gates are low hinged to provide excellent access for packers.

Rapitainer is an innovative reusable transit pack (RTP) developed and supplied by Maxim Solutions. Manufactured in heavy duty twin flute plastic sheet, the packs are lightweight, durable, waterproof and extensively reusable – the key to cost reductions.

Rapitainer was launched last year and Bullen Healthcare Ltd., based on Liverpool’s waterfront, was the first customer to adopt it and to ship goods from their main DC to their satellite hubs.

Bullen had previously spent around £200K each year on ‘ever replaced’ one trip corrugate cases, with around £25 worth of cases used on every pallet shipped. Richie Bell (Bullen Warehouse Manager) explains.

“We were spending a great deal of money on single trip corrugated cases and wanted to make changes to our operations in order to reduce our costs. We looked at various returnable packaging solutions but they all seemed expensive to us.

Above – Rapitainer can be used on any pallet. The unit here is capped and ready for shipping.

Maxim’s Rapitainer was far more affordable and looked to be the most commercially viable option. We trialled a few units, back and forth to one of our satellite hubs. The product performed very well and after just one month, our data showed a saving of £1,200.

We ordered 100 Rapitainer units to service other hubs. Several months into roll out, our data projects savings for the year in excess of £200K (a near 20 fold ROI)”.

For Bullen, the elimination of the cost of single trip corrugate offset the cost of their Rapitainer units after just 4-5 pallet trips.

Effectively that would mean there is no ‘up front’ investment in Rapitainer for a typical customer, as the savings gained offset the purchase price, even before payment becomes due.

After this payback period, every subsequent pallet trip is effectively free of any packaging cost and there is no waste to dispose of. Bullen also gained savings from Rapitainer’s exceptionally large internal volume (height is 1260 mm), which enabled them to reduce the number of pallet trips needed from their DC to each of their hubs, from 5 to 3 per week.

Other customers benefit from the excellent level of protection offered by Rapitainer.

For one retail group, Rapitainer provides reductions in product losses (soft furnishings) due to the prevention of moisture ingress, which caused damage when goods were previously stored in corrugate packaging.

Another customer which had previously been using corrugate pallet packs, switched to Rapitainer corrugate pallet packs, switched to Rapitainer for its robustness, which is reducing damage to mouldings being moved from manufacturing plant to assembly plant.

Maxim Solutions also supplies smaller format reusable packaging including low cost solutions for the pharmaceutical sector and cold chain logistics. These packs incorporate innovative tapeless closure mechanisms – see Maxim’s web site for further details.

The company also has extensive experience in providing innovative bespoke solutions and recently provided ‘safety pick bins’ to a major retail plc for use in their warehouse facility. This unique solution was devised in response to a H&S issue. The specialised bins are used on forks to store items picked from high mezzanine to prevent those items falling from height.

Rapitainer offers the following benefits –

Reduced packaging costs – compared to single trip corrugate

Rapid payback period – often even before payment due date

Reductions in product losses – from water and other damage

Enhanced CSR and compliance with the Packaging Waste Directives

At end of life Rapitainer is 100% recyclable with no separation of parts
