Welcome to the April 15th edition of Warehouse & Logistics News and a happy Easter to all our readers.

As reported on our front cover, the recent LogiMAT Awards in Stuttgart were a celebration of intralogistics industry excellence. Congratulations to Swisslog, whose Condition Monitoring solution won Best Product in the Software, Communication and IT category.

An easy-to-use plug-in within Swisslog’s intelligent SynQ software and part of its proven Cockpit Manager, Condition Monitoring uses advanced data analytics to identify critical warehouse elements and prevent system failures through wear and tear. Swisslog COO Dr Christian Baur predicts this technology will be a catalyst in widening access to intralogistics and transforming it into a service-driven industry.

It’s also awards time in our Power Sources feature, with Industrial Battery and Charger Services, the UK’s leading independent battery specialist, winning Supplier of the Year at the FLTA Awards. The Mayor of London wants to charge diesel vehicles within the North and South Circular £12.50 a day on top of the congestion charge from 2019, which will no doubt encourage more end users to seek alternatives to diesel powered forklifts. Among the options already available, Yale Europe has teamed with Midac to provide lithium-ion solutions for EMEA customers and Calor is offering BioLPG, which cuts greenhouse gases up to 32% when mixed with conventional LPG.

In our Order Picking feature we have news of more major projects in one of the busiest development areas in warehousing. Voiteq’s voice-enabled installation has transformed Queenswood Natural Foods’ order picking in Bridgewater and Sherborne. Over in Erfurt, Germany, Cognex’s barcode readers with real-time monitoring are speeding article picking at Zalando, Europe’s leading online fashion platform.

Founded in 2013 Lumilow Lighting, the warehouse LED specialists have quickly become the trusted lighting supplier for Leeds Bradford Airport, HSS and Morrisons. In our exclusive interview Andy Chell, Lumilow’s MD explains the company’s vision for transforming the industrial lighting market by empowering customers to make informed choices and pushing industry standards.

Driving the industrial doors and loading bays sector forward has also been a longterm priority for Alan Jenkins, Hörmann UK Sales Director, who retires at the end of this month. In our other exclusive interview in this issue Alan looks back over his career, with highlights including setting up Stertil’s UK operation and 13 years at Hörmann UK, where he also chaired the Industrial Group of the Door & Hardware Federation. Alan is retiring but isn’t putting his feet up just yet. His many high-level connections include one of the UK’s leading warehouse developers, so in his words “anything could happen.”

And finally, CLARK Material Handling is celebrating the forklift truck’s 100th anniversary this year by launching a centennial edition of the combustion engine-powered C20-35 series, in honour of company founder Eugene Bradley Clark, who invented the first engine-powered forklift, a threewheel platform truck in 1917. You can read the full story in our Fork Truck News section.

Have a great Easter break.
