A quarter of all workplace accidents involve a lift truck, according to HSE. By not taking the proper precautions, you can put workers at risk and cost employers hundreds of thousands of pounds. Read below to read our top tips for keeping your warehouse safe from fork lift truck accidents.

Pedestrian Safety

1) It is important that the forklift driver knows if pedestrians are around. All employees should wear high-visibility clothing where forklifts are operating.

2) Keep a safe distance. Pedestrians should especially avoid walking near raised forks.

3) Making eye contact can be a good way to establish a pedestrian’s presence with a driver.

Keep your Fork Lift Truck Safe

4) Do not overload the forklift. Overloading restricts the driver’s vision, which may cause accidents. Make sure you know the capacity of the forklift and do not exceed this capacity.

5) Limit forklift travel speed. Never drive above the speed limit. Take care to drive slowly around corners to reduce the risk of tipping and collision.

6) Don’t drive the forklift in crowded areas. Avoid canteens and entrances/ exits at popular times, such as the end of the day.

Think about your Environment

7) Divide your working area into designated walkways. This helps pedestrians and forklift separate.

8) Areas where forklifts are operating should be well lit and clear from obstructions.

9) Avoid collisions by being cautious when approaching doorways, narrow aisles or intersections. Be cautious and drive slowly in these areas. Use the horn if you are in doubt of a pedestrian’s presence.

Install a Proximity Warning Device

10) Reduce the risk of collisions with a proximity warning system. This system alert drivers and pedestrians when they at risk of an accident. Forklift warning systems are a great way to improve situational awareness and forklift safety on your worksite.

The ZoneSafe Proximity warning system has been designed to reduce the risk of collisions around Forklift trucks. The detection zone is fully active, 360° around the forklift or hazard zone. The Zonesafe data system logs all breaches, so you can easily identify and investigate accidents or nearmisses!
