An obvious benefit of saving energy is the cost saving that goes with it, but for the environmentallyconscious there are also benefits to a company’s carbon footprint. The warehouse heater manufacturer, Victory, has done some maths to show how C02 emissions can be drastically reduced, while saving a lot of money.

Victory says that using electric infrared (IR) heaters, instead of gas powered space heating, is far more energy-efficient than heating the whole volume of the warehouse, including stock, racking, walls and ceiling. To demonstrate the savings, the company did some calculations on a live installation.

In a warehouse of 864m2 Victory installed 4 IR heaters in 3 work areas. The heaters use a total of 10.5kW and during a working week consume 1235kWh. They are only switched on when required.

Unlike infrared heaters, gas space heating has to run constantly and it was estimated that space heating the warehouse would use 10,112kWh per week. The IR heaters use a fraction of that – just 12%.

Using figures from the Carbon Trust, Victory calculated that the IR system results in production of 648kg of CO2 per week whereas, at 1856kg of C02 each week (the weight of a car), space heating would create nearly 3 times more.

So the infrared system saves 60% on carbon emissions, as well as a lot of money.

It is not always so black and white, says Alan Penman, Victory’s MD. “A warehouse with space heating can still benefit from infrared heaters as a top-up in particular areas, or in areas where it is not practical to use space heating, such as loading bays. Infrared heaters are instant on-off and if they are controlled by timers or PIR detectors, they only use energy when it is required. Some of the heaters can even be used outdoors and we have a waterproof timer to go with them.”

Victory heaters range from 1.5kW to 6kW, though the company says it can custom-build units up to 18kW. There is also a variety of lamp options, including low glare versions and, exclusively from Victory, ‘Rosegold’ low glare. Infrared heaters emit some light and Rosegold lamps reduce the redness of that light.
