Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, rack safety inspections should not only be undertaken annually by a competent person, but the end user has to take responsibility for carrying out their own regular basic checks.

If an incident occurs within your warehouse and you are visited by the local authority or HSE Inspector, they will ask to see records of internal and external inspections. Therefore it is vital for those involved in the safe management of storage racking to be trained to an acceptable level of competency to carry out their responsibilities.

SESS can offer a range of courses which are either accredited by the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) or approved by the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) or have been developed with their involvement.

These courses, which are not only classroom based, but also have a practical element, are designed to provide knowledge and skills to enable individuals to take ‘ownership’ and safely manage storage racking systems and goods stored thereon. By adopting best practice, in accordance with relevant standards and health and safety legislation, you will minimise the potential risk of injury to personnel, damage to goods and interruption to business.

Each training course concludes with a written assessment. Upon successful completion of the training those delegates will have gained an understanding of, not only how racking is made and used, the basic components involved but also how to inspect the racking safely, how to risk assess damage and other rack-related hazards. The necessity for recording their findings along with the understanding of why load data notices are of such importance.

These courses can be delivered either at client’s own premises or alternatively at SESS Head Office in Northumberland where courses are run monthly.

In addition, we can support clients by providing bespoke courses tailored to suit specific storage environments, such as fully automated high bay installations.

All SESS trainers are experienced SEMA Approved Rack Inspectors (SARI) and in addition hold the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Professional Training Certificate.

Following the training SESS, who were established in 1987, can enhance and support the delegates by providing the competent person to carry out the detailed annual rack safety inspection which would also involve checking that the client’s own internal inspection records are completed correctly.

We can also provide full support from our technical department for any questions that may arise relating to the racking installation. The SESS inspection service is totally INDEPENDENT. They do not make sell or repair racking nor have they any involvement with any manufacturer’s distributor or repairer.
