SEMA President Matt Grierson is a major advocate on investment into safe storage. Setting the scene for the event, he says; “The 2015 revised CDM regulations and this year’s tougher sentencing guidelines for health and safety breaches are indeed making a massive impact in the storage sector.

“Under CDM now, as an end user, you are culpable and can’t pass responsibility down the line to a third party. In the event of an incident, the HSE has the mandate to “track back” and find out where the client has defaulted. You need to remove the third party’s burden, take a pragmatic approach and manage the risk yourself.”

Recent legislation and regulation have created key issues for some of the UK’s major brands to solve. ASDA, John Lewis, Weetabix, Travis Perkins and, Matthew Clark are each providing speakers to profile how they have embraced these tough safety challenges. They will show how compliance with legislation has been embraced to meet the unique needs of their own corporate environments.

Public sector influencers and enforcers, Birmingham City Council, Health & Safety Laboratory and Eastleigh Borough Council will be there to deliver guidance on what is law and how to set about implementing best practice. In response to legislation, wine, beer and spirits distributor, Matthew Clark has implemented a single system of compliance and regulation across its 12 UK sites by engaging with the government’s Regulatory Delivery directorate.

Cantilever racking is a very popular form of storage which must be correctly designed, manufactured, installed and maintained. Steve Cowen chair of SEMA’s Technical Committee will briefly review the recently updated HSE document, HSG246 on the safe storage of metal, long products and heavy goods with a focus on cantilever racking and the variety of materials stored.

Phil Ganner of SpanSet Ltd will talk about how the very latest PPE technology is helping improve safety on site by working closely with SEMA groups and its SEIRS installers.

SEMA’s Dagan Hyde says; “But the bigger picture on ROI is in fact that safety is self-funding. A well-designed racking system built to SEMA Codes of Practice offers longevity so you can access products at the right time, goods remain merchandisable and staff can work in a safe environment. If you think safety’s too expensive, then try having an accident.”
