CLICK HERE TO LAUNCH THE OCTOBER 1st DIGITAL EDITION OF WAREHOUSE & LOGISTICS NEWS MAGAZINE

Welcome to the October 1st edition of Warehouse & Logistics News. Are you suffering from a case of post- IMHX withdrawal? Don’t worry – in our next issue we will bring you our full review of the show.

In the meantime, for your fix of news from the NEC, on our front page you can read how Jungheinrich, the global provider of materials handling equipment and intralogistics solutions, won the Industrial Vehicles category in this year’s Design4Safety competition, the finals of which were held at IMHX, for its integrated pedestrian detection and speed control system. Organised by BITA, the Design4Safety awards highlight the importance of product design in improving safety standards.

Staying with forklifts, as our Fork Truck feature points out, it pays to be careful with the finances when acquiring these crucial machines, just as it does to make sure your staff are trained to operate them safely. Most forklifts in Britain are obtained through finance arrangements but it can be hard to distinguish between the different options, which can mean missing out on the best payment terms. Also in the Fork Truck feature, BITA’s latest report reveals UK forklift orders started 2016 at their strongest in years, before softening slightly in quarter two. Counterbalance trucks continue to be the most in demand, accounting for just under half of all transactions recorded during the period.

As Ambirad, the air curtain suppliers, point out in our Doors & Curtains feature, at this time of year the chain stores are switching the heating on and throwing the doors open to customers. It’s welcoming for shoppers but the resulting energy bills are making a huge hole in these companies’ profits. As the Energy Act 2011 comes into force in less than two years, warehouse operators may want to take a fresh look at their industrial doors, especially those on or near the loading bay. A good place to start would be to consult the leading door suppliers, who will provide a free energy audit of your premises.

As reported in our news pages, manufacturing industry continues to be a major employer of warehousing and logistics workers. The Real Petfood Company is set to create 20 new jobs in Denbighshire within two years and grow the workforce to 100 in five years.

Finally, better warehouse lighting is a proven way to ensure safe working, increase accuracy and reduce accidents, but LEDs and smart controls can also deliver dramatic energy savings for warehouses and distribution centres. Find out more at LuxLive, Europe’s biggest annual lighting show, at London ExCel from 23-24 November. But before that, don’t miss our IMHX post-show review in our next issue. Put October 15 in your diary today!
