Digitalization stands for a rapid change of times in many fields of the economy. Far-reaching changes are expected in Germany’s third-largest sector, logistics. For many market players the topic of digitalization still raises a lot questions over the way it should be applied to logistics processes. The reason for this is, among others, the uncertainty what digitalization means in practice.

For logistics companies and their step into the digital age it is important to view digitalization as a strategic component of company development.

“IT assumes a leading role in companies as it enables new business models and new forms of cooperation”, says Frauke Heistermann, a member of management of IT provider AXIT. Especially in logistics, where establishing connections is vital, digitalization opens groundbreaking options.

But what does digitalization mean especially for logistics? In a new expert paper AXIT has compiled tangible application examples from everyday logistics, describing the practical use of digitalization. These scenarios in the management of supply chains for trade and industry companies as well as logistics providers make clear how processes can be successfully digitalized. The paper also quotes figures on productivity increase and cost savings.

With regard to a step into the digital world Heistermann recommends to neither act for the action’s sake, nor to hesitate: “The time is ripe to deal with this topic and you should take it.” The first step is to set clear goals and determine what is needed.
