frontCLICK HERE TO LAUNCH THE JUNE 1ST DIGITAL EDITION OF WAREHOUSE & LOGISTICS NEWS MAGAZINE

Welcome to the June 1st issue of Warehouse & Logistics News. The election of a new Mayor for London doesn’t usually impact much on logistics businesses elsewhere, but Sadiq Khan is talking about bringing in the Ultra Low Emissions Zone, wider than the current congestion charge zone, as soon as 2019. The proposed move will put increased pressure on logistics operators sending vehicles into London to switch to cleaner vehicles or face fines.

Hopefully the Mayor’s office will consult the experts from our industry who address these problems day in day out. UKWA’s new study, ‘Feeding London 2030,’ covered in this issue, looks at issues affecting future logistics in and around the capital, including the need for more warehouses, distribution sites and fulfillment facilities close to, or within, major population centres. UKWA CEO Peter Ward chaired a lively discussion on ‘The Warehouse of The Future’ at the recent Multimodal event. See page 4 for more details.

Wherever you are in the UK, spring can be a challenging time of year for businesses coping with seasonal demand peaks, special promotions and new business activities getting under way and you need the right combination of capacity and flexibility. To help, we have features on The Loading Bay, Buildings & Facilities and Fork Trucks, looking at short and longer-term options in these areas,

Having the physical space to house your operation is crucial. In our Buildings & Facilities feature temporary buildings market leader Spaciotempo report their best show yet at Multimodal, with the highest ever number of enquiries. In the Loading Bay feature, leased warehouses are another popular solution for short-term capacity but you still need safety measures, which Castell addresses with the new version of its Salvo system, easily transferred when businesses move elsewhere.

As our front cover story from materials handling equipment supplier Jungheinrich reminds us, short-term rental of fork lift trucks is one sure way warehouse operators can meet the heavy demands of peak periods with the minimum risk, commitment or expense. To boost its service capacity Jungheinrich has invested heavily in its short-term rental fleet and recently opened a new regional sales centre in Dartford.

Finally, look out for our exclusive Euro 2016 Championship Planner, presented by UPN and bound in the centre of this issue. The first match, France versus Romania, kicks off on Friday 10th June, just a few days away. You won’t miss a single game with our planner on your office or warehouse wall! Have a good month.
