A Midlands based automotive logistics company wanted to increase the floor space of their facility and turned to Teccon (a Dexion distributor) to install a two-tier mezzanine floor (approx 2000m²) with shelving for parts storage.

This new £32m, 19,500m2 distribution warehouse needed to hold five months inventory of automotive parts, including 240,000 product lines and provide a next day delivery service to 140 car dealers.

The company operating the warehouse wanted to maximise the spare space they had available and so consulted the market for options.

The requirement

Through comprehensive consultation, competitive tendering and impressive design concepts, the Dexion distributor – Teccon, were chosen to execute this project, providing a complete turnkey package. In addition to the installation of a mezzanine floor Teccon were also responsible for the efficient and safe installation of sprinklers, lighting, fire alarms mesh partitioning and over 320 bays of Dexion’s pre-galvanised HI280 shelving within the mezzanine floor area.

Before any of this could happen core samples were taken from the concrete floor slab and tested for strength and stability with subsequent detailed plans being submitted for building regulation approval. The core samples revealed that the mezzanine floor would require piling, due to the imposed loads of more than 460kn on the column grids that would span greater than 8m, which Teccon organised for the client.

The solution

The challenge for Teccon was building the mezzanine floor over 16 docking bay doors, while the warehouse remained fully operational. Installation could therefore only take place between 22.00 and 06.00, which Teccon were able to accommodate in their plans and management of the project.

Due to very tight deadlines, channels of communication were focussed and directed to senior management within the automotive parts company. Decision makers contact was established early on in the project to ensure that any issues which could affect the installation were raised immediately and dealt with efficiently.

The entire project from initial order to completion took approx 16 weeks.

The Automotive Logistics

Company now have a facility that has increased their capacity in what would otherwise have been wasted space over their loading docks.

The Warehouse’s Senior Logistics Manager said, “Teccon is a highly experienced company, they managed the installation for us very efficiently, whilst minimising the interruption during the new mezzanine build, which was a main hurdle.

We were pleased with the way they managed and communicated to all stakeholders and were happy that the build was completed within the agreed time scales.

We will highly recommend Teccon in the future, they have a customer friendly attitude and were very knowledgeable.”
