“Our machines are designed with operator conditions in mind, whether it be ergonomics, safety or performance. We constantly strive to create the best equipment to support operators and help them progress, so teaming up with RTITB seemed a natural fit for us,” says Chris Bates, Sales Director, UniCarriers.

“A competition of this type is valuable, not only because it allows forklift truck operators to measure themselves against their fellow professionals, but the results also create a benchmark for other operators to work towards which can be shared throughout our industry,” continues Chris. “It helps push safety standards even higher.”

UniCarriers has been designing forklifts since 1949 and in 2011 the company merged three brands; Nissan Forklift, TCM and Atlet, to create one superior forklift supplier. The popular brand offers a wide range of machines for loading and unloading, transporting, stacking and picking, and supplies many industries including automotive, construction, electronics, food, pharmaceutical, logistics and manufacturing. UniCarriers equipment is used by many RTITB partners and is designed with the most advanced technology, quality and ergonomics in mind, creating a complete range of materials handling equipment that covers all of a company’s requirements as well as considering the operator’s needs.

“We’re thrilled to have UniCarriers on board as a key partner of the International Lift Truck Operator of the Year 2016. We are delighted to be able to put our shared business values to good use and jointly promote the key message with the industry,” says Laura Nelson, Managing Director at RTITB. “Who better to sponsor our event than a company at the forefront of forklift design and manufacture? Safety is the entire industry’s responsibility and the partnership between RTITB and UniCarriers will hopefully lead us one step further to creating a safer, more productive profession for drivers.”

The first stage of the competition opens on 4th April and comprises a series of online hazard perception tests. This online test is a combination of multiple choice and open questions covering: practical skills, underpinning theoretical knowledge, attitude, pre-use inspection knowledge and efficiency skills. Following the test, a feedback report for each operator entered in to the competition will be sent to their chosen email address. A unique benchmark report which outlines where the operator (or operators, for employers entering several drivers) placed in the international rankings will also be sent via email. Then, those drivers with top scores in the tests will be invited to participate in the next round of the competition.

Taking place from 13th – 16th September at IMHX (International Materials Handling Exhibition), the selected drivers will be required to complete one theory test, one pre-use test and two practical driving tests. The 10 best operators from these heats will then take part in the grand final at RTITB headquarters in the West Midlands on 11th November, forming part of RTITB’s November conference for forklift managers and decision makers. In the final, operators will compete in various live challenges in front of an audience in a bid to be crowned the winner.

Audiences will see UniCarriers materials handling equipment used throughout the practical stages of the competition with live action throughout IMHX.

Chris Bates, Sales Director at UniCarriers adds “The RTITB International Forklift Operator of the Year competition is a hugely important event for the industry. It gives operators something to strive towards, and companies like UniCarriers the chance to see how our equipment is used so we can keep improving our designs, making them safer than ever before.”
