On our front page, we have big news from Impact Handling, Kronecranes’ distribution partner in the UK and Ireland, whose rental fork truck range extends from small pallet trucks to giant port-based machines. Impact has just invested over £1m in new Krone trucks, adding two reach stackers, a pair of heavy-duty forklifts and a specialist 33 tonne capacity truck to its fleet. The new machines will be available for long or short-term hire.

In our news pages we hear how the ‘Brexit’ debate is gathering momentum in the warehousing and logistics industry. UKWA polled over 100 leading UK logistics professionals at their recent lunch at the House of Lords. More than 60 percent felt the nation’s interests would be best served by Britain staying in the EU. You can read the arguments for both sides on page 6.

In our features in this issue we look at Power Sources, Order Picking and Warehouse Lighting.

We hear from suppliers in each of these areas who can help you make business improvements that will unlock increased profitability and bring other rewards.

As our Power Sources feature details, growing numbers of UK warehouses are cutting their forklift fleets’ CO2 emissions by switching from diesel and LPG to electric and other renewable fuels. Motive power sources are developing rapidly, with advances in batteries, chargers and management systems bringing electric trucks’ performance closer to diesel and LPG-powered machines.

British industry spends over £1.1bn annually on warehouse lighting. Our Warehouse Lighting feature reveals that this accounts for 43% of UK PLC’s total electricity expenditure! The good news is that warehouses investing in new lighting can expect energy savings of up to 80%. In January, the Department of Energy and Climate Change published ‘A Guide to Implementing Energy Savings Opportunities.’ The gains from following this advice are sweetened even more by Government incentives, including interest-free loans and capital allowances on investments in energy-saving equipment.

Finally, order picking has come into its own with e-commerce and online shopping, but as our feature explains it can also play a key role in ensuring the availability of ‘mission critical assets.’

Happy reading and we’ll look out for you at Foodex.
