With regulations requiring warehouses to operate safely as well as productively, the FLTA plays a crucial role promoting materials handling safety awareness and liaising with other organisations. FLTA Chief Executive Peter Harvey recently met the HSE’s policy members to discuss a new five-year health and safety strategy.

Elsewhere in our news pages CHEP, the pallet-based supply chain solutions company has been awarded a Gold Recognition Level by rating agency EcoVadis for environmentally conscious development and achievements in a number of key areas including the environment and labour practices.

Britain’s logistics businesses continue to invest in new warehouses, supported by innovative solutions from the leading suppliers. On our front page we have the story of Hörmann Industrial Doors’ latest ground breaking installation, a 101-door super depot for TNT in Swindon, reducing the pressure on TNT’s Midlands hub. Hörmann’s electric doors are PU infilled, offering good thermal insulation. Safety is a central feature in Hörmann’s solution, which includes an LED traffic light system and hinged lips on the dock levelers to connect securely with incoming trucks.

Our features in this issue are Pallet Focus, Packaging and Warehouse IT. In Pallet Focus we report how a major pallet pool has signed a three-year commercial agreement with Iceland that will deliver significant supply chain efficiencies in the UK and abroad, providing some 100,000 pallets in total per year to the frozen foods retailer. At the other end of the weight scale, with airfreight costing 12- 16 times as much as sea freight and customers demanding competitive pricing from suppliers, one solution is to move goods going by air on paper pallets. The Alternative Pallet Company’s Pallite paper pallets incorporate frames so can travel along airports’ conveyor systems and are ISPM15 exempt, acceptable worldwide.

Finally, in our Quote Unquote section on the inside back cover we hear from Greg Clark of floor marking specialists Quality Marking Services. Greg is passionate about markings of all kinds and names his favourite guilty pleasure as tattoos. Would you like to feature in Quote Unquote? Let us know and we’ll include you in a future issue.

Have a successful month
