Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading port operator, were looking to use LEDs in all areas of their Port of Hull Finland terminal. The Port of Hull is one of four Humber ports, which together handle more than 65 million tonnes of cargo annually and contribute £2.2bn to the UK economy. ABP needed a lighting system for three existing warehouses that could meet the demands of a 24-hour port with very little downtime and still give them the energy savings they desired. Luxonic predicted that they would create a minimum 75 per cent reduction in usage through their luminaire installation, but after an initial trial period the actual payback measurement indicated a huge 96 per cent saving.

The three warehouses were previously operating with 400w and 250w high bays, creating a 240kw load. Luxonic changed this on a point for point basis, using its leading HiMax LED Highbay luminaire, meaning the client could utilise its existing wiring for a load of 86kw.

Alongside the luminaires, Luxonic also provided a wireless control system, which meant, for no additional wiring, the luminaires could be grouped and programmed to light at 100lux, and then drop in designated groups to 20 per cent when areas weren’t in use. The main aisles for trucks could be left at 50 per cent whilst remaining adjustable to suit ABP’s needs.

In terms of monitoring, performance could then be viewed on a tablet or on the intranet via the Cloud. The system also offers real time energy monitoring, achieved through a wireless transceiver module in each light, so ABP can check their building online from any point in the country if needed. This is achieved through a wireless transceiver module in each light, accompanied by a motion and daylight sensor, with data being backed up to the Cloud.

With total control and reporting, ABP have gone on to use the system in three other buildings and are continuing to specify its use.

This approach has moved warehousing into the digital age through a combination of highly efficient LED luminaires and a cost-efficient wireless control system with the capability to be reprogrammed. This and the impressive energy savings of 96 per cent make the project in Hull a stand out example of energy and cost efficiency.
