To help you stay on top, our features look at some key aspects of warehouse life – Order Picking, taking in pickers, pick to light, voice picking, and Power Sources, covering all aspects of motive power in the warehouse environment, including batteries, LPG and engines. And don’t miss our Warehouse Safety Supplement, taking an in-depth look at the importance of safety in the warehouse.

In Shaking Stevens’ classic song Green Door the lyric asks, “Green door, what’s that secret you’re keeping?” We never do find out. But there’s no secret at Hörmann, the industrial door and loading bay manufacturer, about how their doors are green, and help ensure warehouses are as green as possible.

As reported on our front page, Hörmann has made a significant commitment over the last few years to enhance its environmental record through its products and its processes. First, it has made its products as thermally efficient as possible, delivering some of the highest levels of environmental performance on the market and helping customers reduce their carbon footprint.

At the same time the company has cut CO2 emissions across its 16 factories by 16,000 tonnes annually. This has involved switching to renewably generated energy, installing combined heat and power plants, moving from oil to gas heating in some locations and introducing an ISO 50001 energy management system to help cut power consumption across its plants. Hörmann’s efforts to improve its green status were acknowledged at this summer’s UKWA award ceremony, where the company won the Environment Award.

As we go to print, warehousing and logistics people nationwide are gearing up for the pre-Christmas selling period. This year the pressure is expected to be greater than ever for everyone involved in the fulfillment of on-line shopping. Thankfully at the end there’s the party season and the Christmas/New Year break to look forward to. As regular WLN readers know, December also sees the publication of the latest Warehouse & Logistics News Annual, taking an in-depth look at all the major events and developments in 2015, and previewing the major trade shows coming up in 2016. Before that, here’s to a successful autumn all round.
