WLN – What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

rachel-thomas

Not knowing what the day has in store for me when I arrive in the office each morning. There is always a different challenge or an unexpected requirement to add to the regular day to day tasks.

WLN – Who’s inspired you most in your career?

The Managing Director of a company I previously worked for. He was a very respected and commanding leader but always made the effort to remember something personal about each employee and take the time to talk to them and consider their views.

WLN – If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

I would be a BT Reflex Reach Truck with tilting cab – supplied by Toyota Short Term Hire, of course. Available in a variety of lifting capacity and height, it’s an invaluable piece of equipment to cope with those seasonal peaks. The tilting cab is unique to Toyota, it helps to drive down costs by reducing neck strain for operators and improving accuracy and visibility of the load at height.

WLN – What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?

My team decorating my office with Birthday banners when I turned 50 a couple of years ago. I was trying to keep that milestone quiet but, no chance of that!

WLN – Who or what makes you laugh?

My daughter – she is very quick-witted and sometimes painfully blunt.

WLN – Do you have any hidden talents?

Well, I do like to do a bit of Salsa dancing – but that’s not so hidden after I took to the stage with Chris Hollins at our last Awards dinner.

WLN – Who would be your favourite party guest?

Mick Hucknall – he has a fantastic voice which stands the test of time and he could provide all the evening’s musical entertainment along with his band Simply Red.

WLN – What is the greatest luxury in your life?

Taking time out for holidays each year is very important and I look forward to spending a relaxing couple of weeks with my daughter to catch up.

WLN – What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

Watching ‘Sunday Brunch’ on TV instead of doing the housework.

WLN – Do you have any secret ambitions?

When I retire, I would love to go to Africa and volunteer to work with lions and other big cats. They are such amazing animals and I would like to contribute to their continued existence for future generations.

WLN – What’s your dream holiday destination?

I love the Caribbean and have been to a few different islands. Sometime, I’d really like to go to Hawaii.

WLN – What are your three favourite movies of all time?

Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and Casablanca.

WLN – What is your favourite book of all time?

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier – although I’m a big fan of Stephen King, I can really identify with the characters in Rebecca and it’s a book I’ve read many times.

WLN – What’s your favourite pastime?

I do a few classes at the gym each week and a bit of Salsa dancing but also enjoy the simple things like walking the dog and spending time with family and friends.

WLN – If you won the Lottery, what would you do?

There are a few good friends and family members that I would look after and I’d be sure to set my daughter well onto the property ladder. After that, my favourite charities would get a look in and I’d definitely bring forward my plans to work with endangered species and conservation of the environment.

WLN – What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry (apart from “don’t do it”)?

Work hard at being a trusted advisor – the most important thing for customers, suppliers and colleagues alike is that you do what you say you will and don’t promise what you can’t deliver.
