A new manual handling training programme designed exclusively for professionals in the transport, warehousing and logistics sectors is now available from RTITB. The course aims to ensure businesses comply with manual handling regulations, reduce handling injury risk and make sure money invested in manual handling training is not wasted on poor and irrelevant training.

New RTITB Manual Handling Training designed exclusively for logistics industryAccording to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), incorrect manual handling is the most common cause of workplace injury, leading to 909,000 working days lost in 2013/14. Statistics show that transportation and storage has the second highest handling injury rate of all industries, with LGV drivers, elementary storage operatives and transport operatives accounting for 32.4% of all major handling injuries in 2013/14.

“This is a huge problem, costing our industry immeasurable sums of money each year and putting workers at unnecessary risk. Manual handling training is a legal requirement, but we believe the logistics sector presents specific risks that generic manual handling courses don’t adequately address,” explains Laura Nelson, Managing Director of leading workplace transport training accrediting body, RTITB.

“RTITB’s short, practical, assessed course is the most effective way to avoid injury-related absences, and by investing in the new RTITB manual handling for transport, warehousing and logistics course, employers can be confident the training they provide to employees is relevant and delivered to a high, nationally recognised standard.”

The practical course enables candidates to learn and practice correct handling techniques in a controlled environment, allowing them to develop confidence before using their new skills in the workplace. Training culminates in an end test, providing employers with a real measurement of who is competent to undertake manual handling operations and anybody that requires further training.

All RTITB courses are delivered to a set guide and recorded centrally on the RTITB database, so there are sufficient records of training content, dates and who has been trained. This way, businesses can ensure they comply with legislation according to L23 Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

Correct manual handling training could also help to improve efficiency in the workplace. Employees are likely to be happier and more confident knowing high safety standards are in place, and improving manual handling techniques may result in faster working speeds.

“Prevention is always better than cure,” adds Laura Nelson. “RTITB has developed this training programme to improve employee safety standards, which in turn, reduces absence and the associated added costs to businesses.”
