Joe Jackson, Potter Logistics

Hoppecke-LogoHighJoe Jackson started with Potter Logistics in February 2014, however his career did not start as most do. Joe contacted the company directly asking if there were any jobs available no matter what the position. He had recently graduated from university with a Business Management degree (including a logistics pathway module) and after speaking with Joe, the general manager of Potter’s York DC offered him a four week voluntary position.

During Joe’s four week voluntary position his progress was monitored each week by the customer service manager. This included his day to day activities, his strengths, weaknesses and what he felt he needed to improve on or gain more knowledge of. After Joe’s four week voluntary position the general manager was so impressed he was given a fixed term contract as a trainee planner, this allowed him to take in every aspect of the department. Joe had weekly review meetings, this time with the planning manager. He insisted these continued so he could further develop his skills and be a meaningful member of the transport team. As Joe’s learning developed Potters saw strong potential from him to be an active member of the transport team and in September 2015 he was offered a permanent position.

James Aylward, Century Logistics Limited

James Aylward started with Century Logistics in 2010 as a warehouse operative, working in one of the company’s Thetford sites. James soon found his feet and progressed well in his new job. The contract James works on is a complicated pick and pack operation with high order volumes, involving a large number of small items per consignment.

Within a couple of years a supervisor’s role became available, which James was considered for but it was felt he needed a little more experience to step up to this role at the time.

This didn’t deter James’ enthusiasm or commitment to his job. Indeed, a new person was externally recruited for the role and James went out of his way to support the new supervisor in every way he could.

In 2014, when the role became available again, James was the natural choice to take on the supervisor’s position. In no time at all James stepped into his new role and has since made significant improvements to the running of the contract.

He has completely re-designed what was quite a restricted space to become a very organised operational area, improving efficiencies and movement of goods; He has streamlined the picking and packing process to improve workflow and reduce order times; and, turned a storage area into a usable office to separate the admin area and provide Century’s customer with a hot desk when they are on site

The overall effect has been to reduce a complicated Amazon order from days to hours to pick, pack and dispatch, with extremely high accuracy rates.

Samantha Trubshaw, Cornish Orchards

Cornish Orchards is a craft cider and soft drink producer and Sam Trubshaw joined the company aged 20 in November 2012, as part of Cornish Orchards’ Customer Care Team. She quickly established herself as an efficient, quick learning employee, whose logical approach to problem solving made her essential to the smooth despatch of customer orders, particularly during the busier seasons. Sam’s key responsibilities initially involved processing and despatching orders received via an online retail website. However, her natural abilities in logistics and planning meant she soon took the main responsibility for planning all van routes for delivering goods within Cornwall and Devon.

Having successfully held this role for 2 years, Sam commenced training in the export side of the business, processing and planning the despatch of orders that would travel as far as Hong Kong and Australia. As her experience in logistics grew, Cornish Orchards recognised the value of such a capable employee, promoting Sam to Stock and Transport Co-Ordinator, a position developed especially to combine Sam’s abilities with the growing company’s needs.

Having held this new role since December 2014, Sam now reports directly to the Operations Manager, with her key responsibilities including delivery planning (for direct customers, third party customers and export), transport administration and stock management. Transferring her knowledge of the customer base, and order processing procedures, Sam has already introduced a number of new systems to the warehouse management. Primarily, these systems have addressed errors in the processing and reconciliation of all stock movements on the internal stock management system, including packaging materials, finished goods and re-works. Her diligence and attention to detail have brought a new logical approach to the warehouse management, unifying the team and greatly increasing the performance of the company as a whole.

He arrives early every day and only leaves when he feels comfortable that all tasks have been completed to a high standard. Employees like Jake are very difficult to find and we are extremely lucky to have him on our team.”
