PPS who relocated into larger more modern premises in Marchington, Uttoxeter faced the daunting prospect and challenge of how to successfully light a 75000 sq. ft. warehouse as part of an ongoing plan to renovate its new facility. Originally fitted with incandescent lamps, PPS needed to establish a more efficient and environmentally friendly lighting system.

As a leading supplier of Returnable Transit Packaging (RTP) services and extolling the virtues and benefits of massive reductions in packaging waste and the carbon footprint of companies – compared with one-trip boxes/packaging – it was appropriate that PPS set an example.

“Our business is focused on building environmentally friendly supply chains so it was essential that we took this approach to building the correct infrastructure with the new warehouse and its refurbishments” reported Andy Flynn, Operations Director for PPS. “Having understood the benefits and cost savings that we would incur, it was also important to review this from a health and safety angle. Poor workplace illumination could lead to accidents, ill health and fatigue in workers. LED lamps emit a bright white light that provides a safe working environment for our staff who operate machinery 24 hours a day.”

The LED (light-emitting diode) is a two-lead semiconductor light source and has proven benefits over the dated incandescent device. The first blue LED light was invented in 1993 which transformed lighting technology forever, followed by the introduction of the white LED. Providing lower energy consumption, a longer life span and greater robustness, the inventors were inevitably awarded the Noble Prize in 2014 for their achievements of creating a modern energy saving light source.

After completing the installation PPS has reduced the companies CO2 emissions by 47438 KGC02 per year. This is the equivalent to a 13 watt CF light bulb being lit continuously for 8.78 years and will have achieved a full return on the investment over two years. This provides for both excellent cost savings for the future and a reduced carbon footprint.
