WLN – Who inspired you the most in your career?

Justin-head-and-shoulders-1[5]Mr George Abraham, Director of Penwright Supply Ltd (a London based Dexion Distributor company) and father of a close friend of mine. George first started out within the Storage Equipment industry over 50 years ago and I have been working alongside George for around 20 years. During our time spent together, George has provided me with a wealth of experience and has taught me how to keep cool when presented with even the most challenging situations.

WLN – What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

The introduction of technology to complete our inspections is an exciting achievement. We spent two years creating an application that allows us to create a very detailed inspection report which we can talk through with the customer. Everything is now handled digitally, right down to signing reports on our work tablets. It has been great to watch technology become a part of our everyday lives.

WLN – If you were an item in a warehouse, what would you be?

A vintage 1957 625 TRC Ferrari Spider. I complete annual pallet racking inspections for a well known auction house, which provides an opportunity to admire some rare and valuable items including a garage full of classic cars. I’m not a car enthusiast, but it’s an impressive sight to see classic cars parked alongside each other in pristine condition.

WLN – What’s the most embarrassing thing to happen to you at work?

I don’t get embarrassed easily but I did have a minor incident this week with a newly bought steel ruler. Within seconds I dropped the ruler between a tall stack of pallets just too far for me to reach by hand. Luckily, included in my inspection equipment is a pair of magnets and string which I put together and dangled between the pallets to retrieve it. I think the warehouse staff looking on may have wondered why I was so interested in the very narrow gaps between some of their pallets.

WLN – Who or what makes you laugh?

Many things, but especially my 4-month-old son who is currently trying to communicate by blowing bubbles.

WLN – Do you have any hidden talents?

I make an amazing chocolate and ginger torte. I’ve mastered this dessert dish and now have a few requests (some of which are months in advance) to bring it along to any forthcoming parties.

WLN – Who would be your favourite party guest?

Jack Nicholson.

WLN – What’s the greatest luxury in your life?

Alfresco breakfasts on a hot summer’s weekend morning.

WLN – What’s your dream holiday destination?

Maldives. We were lucky enough to visit one of the beautiful Maldivian islands on our honeymoon which I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a visit to paradise and has a spare suitcase full of cash to pay for it.

WLN – Favourite movie of all time?

The Shawshank Redemption.

WLN – Favourite book of all time?

Warlock by Wilbur Smith.

WLN – Favourite pastime?

I’m a big fan of tennis and spend as much time as work and family life allows playing at my local tennis club.

WLN – If you won the lottery, what would you do?

Buy two homes abroad. One in the French mountains and one in the Caribbean and spend as much time as possible each winter between the two properties.

WLN – What would be your advice to someone thinking about coming into the industry?

The storage equipment industry is one that many people aren’t fully aware of, but there is a big demand within the UK for this type of equipment. The safety side of the industry is an area that is noticing a constant growth of awareness and with the proposed changes to SEMA regulations, we have been busier than ever. The main thing is to provide a helpful, informational and professional service to customers. By working with our customers one on one and by providing free advice and information through our blog we hope that ultimately we can improve safety in the workplace for everyone.

Justin O’Sullivan is the only SEMA Approved Inspector based within London. With over 25 years experience within the storage equipment industry, Justin provides pallet racking inspections and training for SME’s through the South East of England.
