Rob Samuelson – Commercial Director of MCS accredited solar installer Energy Jump explains the benefits of turning your warehouse roof into a power station and what you can do even if you haven’t got a penny to invest.

Everywhere I look I see empty roof-space and at the same time I hear companies complaining about the rising costs of electricity. Warehouse roof space is a key resource in providing the country’s energy needs and solar photovoltaic panels can play an important role in your business’ cost control strategy. The solution is above your heads! Here’s why you need to give solar your attention.

1. Costs are at an all- time low. Global production of solar panels has ramped up so prices have tumbled. Paybacks for large systems can be as little as 4 ½ years but normally between 5-7 years.

2. Solar technology is more reliable. All panels are independently audited and come with 25 year independent performance guarantees you can also monitor every single panel.

3. Your customers expect more Proving your environmental credentials is an essential way of staying ahead of the competition, either as part of a formal audit or as a key sales approach. Cutting supply chain Carbon Dioxide is a priority for many customers.

4. You get paid for what you produce. The government feed-in-tariff subsidy is still in operation and rewards you for generating clean energy. You get paid for every unit (kilowatt hour) you generate and again for every unit you export.

5. Reduce your running costs. Every unit of energy you generate on site means one less you import from the grid. Good news.

6. Act now or pay later. The costs of investing in new power stations and reducing carbon emissions are being passed on through your bills. Putting off the decision to protect yourself from these stealth charges will only cost you dearly later.

7. Full UK support. We are now more experienced than ever in knowing the best technical solution and are responsive to technical issues if they arise.

8. You don’t need a purely south facing roof. All roof orientations  facing from East to West have good generation potential. South facing systems have the highest yield but East / West systems often maximise savings.

9. Generating electricity helps you focus on energy saving. Many people find that once they start generating, they become more aware of their electricity usage, enabling them to cut out wastage, further reducing bills.

10. Funding is available. If you can’t self-fund you can get a loan which is paid off by the savings and revenue generated. If that’s not an option you can rent your roof space out in return for lower electricity prices.
