With an estimated 3.7 billion parcels being sent annually to customers in the UK and throughout the EU, and with consumer demands evolving to an ‘anytime, anywhere’ mindset, the efficient and secure movement and distribution of goods has never been higher on the agenda. And yet, damaged goods not only represent a loss of profit and disappointed customers, it can also have serious repercussions for your company’s brand and its reputation.

Advances in packaging solutions have given warehouse and logistics managers the opportunity to increase efficiencies in the workplace, minimise costs and reduce waste, while at the same time, delivering maximum load containment. The key to success therefore, is achieving the right balance in terms of investment, containment and efficiency.

Whether handling high value items or low cost products, by the time they are contained and palletised, the load takes on a significantly higher value. If this load shifts or becomes damaged in storage or in transit, the whole containment could be rejected, at significant cost, so taking the time to consider the right stretch wrapping solution and investing in the right equipment, can deliver more than just a secure load.

With so much variety of stretch wrapping solutions on the market, from manual, semi-automatic and automatic models, and a choice of turntable, straddle or ring configurations, the prospect of selection can be quite daunting. There are a few key considerations to bear in mind when selecting the right stretch wrapping solution, notably the construction and composition of the palletised load, the amount of floor space available, not forgetting budget.

Straddle models, whereby the load remains still and the film rotates around the pallet, are more suited to very heavy loads weighing over 2 tons or unstable loads that may not withstand rotation.

They require permanent fixation to the floor and loose the positioning flexibility of a turntable machine.

Turntable wrappers are the most common form of stretch wrap machines, handling a range of applications, they dispenses the stretch film around the pallet positioned on a turntable that spins up to 15 revolutions per minute. Less floor space is needed with the added advantage of being portable should wrapping in various locations be required. There are a large variety of turntable wrappers to choose from; semi-automatic versions are good for up to 30 loads per hour and designed for use with a forklift or pallet jack. The fully automatic models are used in conjunction with a conveyor, and more suited to high volume output.

Finally, budget will also have a part to play in the choice of your stretch wrapping solution, although with the potential to increase output and efficiencies in terms of time and film consumption, there are real cost benefits to be secured from any capital investment. Further savings and indeed increased safety can also be delivered by migrating many manual wrapping operations to automatic or semi-automatic solutions.

At Antalis Packaging, our wide range of stretch wrapping systems offer some of the lowest cost of wrapping loads while providing maximum efficiency and containment. Furthermore, our Lantech series of semi-automatic and automatic stretch wrappers are capable of extending the yield of the stretch film by up to three times, offering additional cost / packaging waste savings for high volume users.
