This year has created both opportunities and challenges for operators across the logistics industry. The pallet network sector has seen double-digit growth over the past 12 months, which has been to the benefit of Pall-Ex members. However, in contrast, factors such as the new driver CPC regulations, which have caused an acute, industry-wide shortage of drivers, have created new obstacles for hauliers to overcome.

Kevin1Pall-Ex’s focus on its high-calibre membership is stronger than ever, as it seeks to recruit further quality members and uphold the high standards achieved, delivered, and represented by its vibrant brand.

This focus was cemented by the appointment of Kevin Buchanan as Pall-Ex Group managing director in November, and the company continues to drive quality and service standards across the industry. Buchanan has strong ambitions for the network, and, commenting on what this change would mean for members and service-users, said: “There is a very clear determination that the relationship between the network and its members is a fair and equitable one.”

Throughout 2014, there have been a wealth of success stories within Pall-Ex’s network. A prime example of this growth can be found at Neil Bomford Haulage, who recently announced that 30 new clients and £1million revenue had been generated since joining the network in 2012. Explaining the benefits of membership, David Waterman, business development manager at Neil Bomford Haulage, said: “The Pall-Ex network has allowed us to gain access to businesses that previously we were unable to get close to.”

2014 hasn’t just been about domestic success. European expansion continued to be a major focus for Pall-Ex this year too, with campaigns to establish Principal National Partners well underway in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Plans are progressing well for the launch of Pall-Ex Benelux, and an announcement will be made in the New Year.

The third quarter bought with it a degree of financial relief for Pall-Ex and its members, as a drop in diesel prices was responsible for freeing up more than £1million across the network. Fuel duty is an issue that Pall-Ex has consistently led the way upon, in a campaign that will continue into 2015.

On a lighter note, April 2014 saw Pall-Ex sign a sponsorship deal with Rio De Janeiro Olympic hopefuls and Canoe Slalom C2 athletes, Matthew Lister and Rhys Davies. Hilary Devey, CEO of Pall-Ex Group, commented on the sponsorship: “I greatly admire this pair’s drive and determination. They really are giving it their all to get to Rio 2016 and I’m delighted we’re in a position with Pall-Ex to help them on their way.” The pair even named their new boat after Pall-Ex’s founder and CEO.

Looking forward to 2015, Pall-Ex’s plans can be summed up by Buchanan’s goal of “transforming the business into the undisputed market leader within three years, by focusing efforts on developing the business throughout the UK and Europe.” His leadership will see the network expand across Europe as it aims to be delivering the same number of pallets on the continent as it does in the UK.
