As energy costs rise, the benefits of running an energy efficient operation extend far beyond being seen to be green. Sustainability is increasingly at the heart of warehouse planning, with energy saving measures being implemented in factories across the country.

Over the last few years, Hörmann UK Ltd has worked closely with industrial real estate owners and tenants to minimise the environmental impact of loading bays, while meeting the demands of increasingly busy warehouses.

At Asda’s chilled distribution and recycling centre in Rochdale, Hörmann installed 140 loading bays, designed to handle a range of trailers without unnecessary thermal losses. Hörmann’s ISO Speed Cold Doors were fitted to the internal part of the freezer loading bays, while a secondary door was added in front of the dock leveller to prevent thermal bridging. In the chilled area, Asda opted for three Hörmann HS7030 high-speed spiral doors, with two insulated SPU sectional doors fitted to the exterior.

In the docking bay, LED lighting with PIR sensors provide a better spread of light into trailers, but are only activated when needed, further reducing energy use.
Hörmann’s approach to loading bay development is to offer the most energy-efficient solutions that meet the operational needs of the customer, an outlook that the manufacturer adopts with its own production facilities.

CO² emissions across the company’s 16 factories has been reduced by 16,000 tonnes each year through a variety of measures, including the use of renewably generated energy, the installation of combined heat and power plants, and switching from oil to gas heating at some locations. Such measures allow the company to maintain its high manufacturing standards while significantly reducing their environmental impact.

As a commitment to energy efficiency, an ISO 50001 energy management system has been introduced throughout the Hörmann Group. This includes intelligent building services management to help lower power consumption across the individual plants.

Raw materials for Hörmann’s products are, where possible, sourced from high-quality local suppliers in central Europe, reducing the impact of transporting goods to its manufacturing facilities in Germany. The benefit to customers of such stringent policies is not only that the company can provide Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its full multi-function door range, but that the careful selection of materials helps to ensure the long service life and low maintenance requirements of Hörmann products.

With a proven commitment to energy efficiency in its own operations, Hörmann has the expertise to support the logistics industry in enhancing sustainability. To find out more about reducing the environmental impact of your loading bay, contact Hörmann’s industrial team on 01530 516888.
