Thorn Lighting presented RSL with a heavyweight challenge by asking them to supply products for one of the largest coatings projects of recent years, a 22,000 sq m factory floor in County Durham – at the time one of the firm’s newest manufacturing facilities.

The then new production site, built on an existing factory, needed a hard-wearing floor with level consistency throughout.
Working closely with expert contractors RSL recommended using R S Dampshield and Resucoat HB. Both products have proven track records for ease of application and were applied quickly and effectively. Keeping installation times to a minimum on such a large project was a major priority for RSL’s contractor team.
Once the surface had been shot blasted, to prepare the floor, R S Dampshield was used as the essential surface damp proof membrane. This epoxy resin membrane is specially designed to tolerate residual moisture within a new concrete floor so the epoxy resin coating could be applied a lot sooner after installation of the concrete substrate.
Resucoat HB was then applied – quickly and easily – and once cured, provided an excellent sealed, continuous surface – perfect for heavy wear.
Martin Wroe, RSL commercial director, said the product was very popular for warehouse flooring, industrial areas in general and plant rooms.
“It is economical to install with a long-life expectancy, and provides tough, resilient surfaces for the heaviest of production set up. The seamless finish also means that trip hazards are kept to a minimum. In busy warehouse environments this can dramatically reduce the risk of injury which is very important.”

The Workforce Health & Safety and Welfare Regulations 1992 state clearly that surfaces should not have holes, be uneven or slippery and should be free of articles or substances which may cause someone to slip, trip or fall.
