Scott Whittlestone, part of the senior management team at articulated forklift truck manufacturer, Flexi Narrow Aisle, will be donning his lycra and taking to the saddle this autumn and cycling the 340km between London and Brussels to raise money for Transaid.
He is part of a team riding to generate funds for Transaid’s vital work to improve the transport infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa and other developing countries.
The trip is scheduled to last three days and will arrive at Brussels via Bruge.
Transaid was founded by Save the Children and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the charity’s Patron is HRH The Princess Royal.
Scott commented “Transport is essential for life but the reality for many people across Africa and the developing world is that access to transport is poor, inadequate or unreliable.
He continues: “Road crashes kill an estimated 1.3 million people each year – indeed, in sub-Saharan Africa road deaths are the third biggest killer behind HIV/AIDS and malaria.
“Furthermore, up to 40% of the harvest can be lost due to inefficient transport, lack of trained drivers and impassable roads in rural areas.
“Transaid are addressing these issues and have trained nearly 5500 commercial drivers in Africa through their Professional Driver Training Programme, resulting in a significant reduction in collisions and deaths. Last year alone, they trained 2368 PSV drivers in Tanzania, dramatically improving safety especially for school children in rural areas.”
