The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) report that there are over 5000 accidents involving transport in the workplace each year, with the main cause of injury being people struck or crushed by the vehicles.

The cost implications of this problem can be significant; accidents involving transport within the workplace not only mean personal costs for the employee, but there are also disruption costs to businesses such as lost productivity through employee absence from work, reduced employee efficiency and poor staff morale, together with the potential damage caused to both an organisation and its reputation through negative publicity.

Well known for improving workplace safety, Davis Derby, world leading supplier of fleet management systems, driver access control and safety monitoring equipment, has recently introduced the Pedestrian Alert System. The system not only detects pedestrians and objects but also provides a warning and control thereby influencing the driver to improve safety, or reduce the speed of the vehicle if no action is taken.

Ian Roberts, Davis Derby’s General Manager advises: “The purpose of the system is to identify pedestrians and objects within 5 metres of mobile plant and provide a warning system to the mobile plant so that drivers are alerted to the problem and automatic control systems can be triggered where applicable.”

With an approach to product development that focuses on both safety and technology, the Pedestrian Alert System is set to provide an intelligent solution to improving pedestrian safety around vehicles for those working in the Logistics, Warehousing and Manufacturing sectors.
