With a £6 million investment in a substantial power supply, Gateway Peterborough has an ambition to be the key UK distribution hub for frozen logistics operators.

The 240-acre greenfield site, which opened in February this year, is strategically located on the edge of Peterborough with direct access links to the fertile agricultural lands of East Anglia – the major arable crops being potatoes, root crops and cereals.

The A1(M) provides a North-South link and the nearby A14 gives an East-West link to Felixstowe and into the Midlands.

Charles Blake, Development Director for Roxhill Developments who own the site, said: “Our investment in an 18 MVA power supply for Gateway Peterborough will be of particular interest to frozen logistics operators who have large electricity requirements. It’s strategic location between the East Midlands and East Anglia will catch the eye of food stock producers and cold storage specialists.

“Gateway Peterborough is up and running with a main dual carriageway, estate roads and all utility connections in place. Its planning consent also means that buildings can be delivered in just six months. Whether national, regional or sub-regional the site is able to satisfy any requirement, working with our customers to deliver buildings for expansion, relocation or consolidation.”

Gateway Peterborough is capable of accommodating building of up to 1.3 million sq ft for B1, B2 and B3 employment uses.

Frozen food logistics service provider Yearsley Group will be the site’s second occupier – of a 385,000 sq ft unit – following parcel delivery services provider DPD.

Yearsley’s Managing Director Harry Yearsley reinforced the appeal of the site to frozen logistics operators, saying: “Gateway Peterborough is the idea location given its proximity to the A1 and A14. The support we have received from Roxhill enabled us to obtain planning permission for exactly the type of building that is required to maintain our industry leading position.”

An accompanying £11 million upgrade to Junction 17 of the A1(M) is currently underway.
