Materials handling services specialist Briggs Equipment has won a new multi-million pound contract to supply a mix of equipment to Bibby Distribution, one of the UK’s leading logistics companies.

Briggs Equipment beat off stiff opposition from 11 other potential suppliers to secure the business in a highly competitive tender process.

Bibby Distribution has ordered 146 machines for use both indoors and outside. Of these, 102 are Yale counterbalance forklift trucks, with the remainder being warehousing equipment, cleaning machines and versatile articulated vehicles. The company has so far taken delivery of 70 machines, which will be put to use at 25 of its sites throughout the UK. The remainder of the fleet will be delivered by May 2014.

The total solution package provided by Briggs Equipment comes with a high degree of flexibility. This means that if Bibby Distribution needs to right size its fleet by adding or removing units, it can do so without incurring onerous penalties. This flexibility

was a key factor in the decision-making process, as was the fact that it enabled Bibby Distribution, as a 3PL business, to consolidate its supplier base.

“We were very impressed by Briggs Equipment’s understanding of the changing face of logistics, its ability to offer real flexibility in materials handling solutions and its willingness to work closely with us to determine the most appropriate equipment mix,” says

Jonathan Rose, Head of Marketing at Bibby Distribution.

“It is also reassuring to know that Briggs Equipment has one of the largest teams of skilled engineers nationwide to help keep our fleet operating at peak efficiency.”

In addition to demonstrating its intelligent asset management tool that promotes safety and efficiency within a business by changing driver attitudes and behavior, Briggs Equipment employed Yale’s 3D Construction Design Management (CDM) technology and data analytics to provide a warehouse simulation of how the new equipment would perform across key Bibby sites. Bibby Distribution was also able to put the equipment through its paces in advance of concluding the new contract, taking numerous vehicles on a short-term rental basis over the past 12 months.

Bibby’s new depot in Max Park, Corby became operational in March 2013. Briggs Equipment worked with Bibby to get it up and running, providing 20 forklift trucks on short-term hire and monitoring performance before replacing them with the new machines.

Bibby Distribution is one of the UK’s leading logistics providers, operating two million sq. ft. of warehousing space from more than 90 locations and employing 2,500 people. The company is active across a variety of industries from automotive to FMCG, providing contract logistics, warehousing, distribution, systems integration and added value services so that its customers derive maximum value from their supply chain.
