FrontThe UK economy grew 1.9% last year, its strongest since 2007 according to the Office for National Statistics. Realistic rather than romantic, Mr Osborne admits there’s more to do, but we’re heading in the right direction. He points out the recovery is broadly based, with manufacturing growing more than other sectors, confirming the UK is a great place to invest and grow your business, especially for warehousing and logistics professionals serving manufacturing and retail.

In this issue we have features on Pallet Networks, Power Sources and Order Picking, subjects crucial to anyone wanting to enhance their warehouse and logistics performance in today’s leaner business environment. In ‘Pallet Networks’ we look at the latest major European, UK and regional pallet networks. ‘Power Sources’ covers motive power in the warehouse and logistics environment, including batteries, LPG and engines. And as retail goes multi-channel and e-commerce grows and grows, in ‘Order Picking’ we have news on pickers, pick to light and voice picking.

Warehouses work round the clock in all weathers, making the doors and related components one of the most important parts of the building, and problems need fixing quickly and effectively. As featured on our front cover Hörmann, the garage and industrial doors supplier, now includes multi-brand servicing for all makes of equipment as part of its 24/7 repair and maintenance support. Demand from the logistics industry for manufacturer-backed service has been growing rapidly as distribution networks evolve.

Leaner operations geared to be more adaptable as business needs change rely on ever more sophisticated loading equipment. Greater integration of the loading bay means the various components, doors, dock levellers, traffic control systems and safety devices, need to operate efficiently at all times. In addition, legislative changes and the industry’s commitment to improving safety are key factors leading to this increased demand.

Preventative maintenance is seen as providing a double benefit, since it is part of the safety regime and leads to cost savings by reducing downtime and extending the lifecycle of equipment. For Hörmann products, extended warranties can be included as part of service contracts, adding even greater value. To meet this increased need, Hörmann is adding to its team of field service engineers, and investing in even more training, to extend the high-quality service the industry has come to expect from Hörmann to all makes of equipment as well as their own.
