New ranges of pallet wrap film are now available in the UK which will save users money on each pallet that they wrap.

Available exclusively through Gloucestershire-based Golden Valley Pallet Wrap Specialists Ltd (GVPS) the films – designated the Carbon and Alloy ranges – are available in both hand- and machine-applied versions.

Golden Valley say that, wrapping a typical palletised load using a standard 23 micron pallet wrap costs, on average, 28 pence but to wrap the same pallet with Carbon or Alloy machine pallet wrap costs just 18 pence – a saving of 10p per pallet. For a company that wraps 500 pallets per day this would equate to a saving of £13,000 per year.

In one instance, GVPS has been able to demonstrate that a leading third party logistics company will save a staggering £750,000 per year by switching to the new film.

The film’s strength comes from the innovative chemical compounds and the ultra modern manufacturing technique used in their production. Carbon and Alloy films are made from a blend of Octene and Henxene polymers and are produced using state of the art extrusion machinery which enables a seven layer bonded pallet wrap to be produced whereas traditional films have only three years.

Despite being a thinner material than old style pallet wrap, the new Golden Valley Carbon and Alloy films offer exceptional strength and puncture resistance which means less wrapping is needed to achieve optimum palletised load stability.

Aside from the obvious costs benefits they bring, the new films have other advantages too. For example, because less film is used to wrap a pallet the user produces less packaging waste thereby reducing its carbon footprint.

Also, as more pallets are wrapped per roll of Alloy or Carbon film, less downtime is incurred by the need to change the film roll in applications where pallet wrapping machinery is used.

And, because fewer wraps are required to provide load stability, pallets are wrapped more time efficiently.

Martyn Sumner, managing director of GVPS, comments: “Most buyers of pallet wrap buy on the price per roll of film and have very little concept of how much it actually costs them to wrap a pallet using that film.

“This is a very shortsighted approach that is likely to be costing their business thousands of pounds each year.

“Finance directors would not allow their company sales teams to drive around in cars that only do 20 miles per gallon, so why throw money away on film that does not wrap pallets efficiently?”
