Five employees of a local industrial battery company have raised over £500 for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice after taking part in the charity’s ‘Ruby Bike Ride’ challenge.
The team embarked on a 51 mile bike ride on Sunday 19 May and was led by Richard Houghton, 49, from Lightwood. They cycled through Nantwich and Market Drayton before returning to base at the Michelin Athletics Club in Trent Vale.
The Douglas Macmillan Hospice provides specialist care to adults with progressive, advanced diseases and limited life expectancy. It was established in 1972 and gains its funding through hospice shops, fundraising events, lottery and general donations from the public.
Richard, rail technician of Wolstanton-based, Hoppecke Industrial Batteries, commented: “We really enjoyed taking part in the Ruby Bike Ride. As a team we trained around local bike trails before the event and received a lot of support with some family members coming all the way from Cornwall.”
In addition to Richard, the Hoppecke team included Tony Lovatt, Lee Thursfield, David Millett and Steve Beeston. They were also joined by Richard’s relatives, Melvin Houghton and Dave Walters as well as Sue Tupling of Changeworks who has worked with Hoppecke on marketing and public relations projects. The £500 raised will go towards helping the charity continue its work of the hospice.
