For a company with a global reputation for engineering and delivering high performance technologies to a diverse range of industries, Cosworth is a world leader in its field. So it is only fitting they should turn to another leader in its field AmbiRad for an energy-efficient and better value way of cooling internal air in their Northampton factories.

With air conditioning systems notoriously expensive to run and tricky to install, AmbiRad worked with specialist contractor Workplace Safety Management on designing a cooling system which offered the most efficient way of cooling three factories used for machining various engine components. The solution was found in the evaporative cooling system ColdAIR which cools the air using a natural principle and is on average 75% cheaper to install than air conditioning.

These evaporative cooling systems provide a versatile, practical and low cost alternative to traditional air conditioning in the Cosworth factories. Ideal for applications where using a conventional air conditioner would prove logistically difficult, evaporative coolers are cost-effective and can reduce the internal air temperature when required.

For Factory 12 which has a volume of 10,650m3, Workplace Safety Management installed eight ColdAIR RA150 units which were mounted onto existing roof input fan ducts. The fans were removed and the ducting was modified to accept the external cooler and the 8 way discharge plenum within the works.

The existing roof extraction fans were maintained as their extraction rates matched the air input rates. The same installation techniques were used throughout Factory 3 which required 6 ColdAIR units for a volume of 1254m3 and for Factory 4 which required 2 ColdAIR units for a volume of 1264m3.

Designed with energy efficiency in mind, the ColdAIR evaporative cooling system from AmbiRad uses only 20% of the energy used by traditional air conditioning. ColdAIR makes use of the free latent energy in the atmosphere. Cooling the internal environment by drawing air through continually wetted pads that surround the ColdAir unit, the system integrates this ‘natural air conditioning’ technique in an innovative way.

The ColdAIR does not rely on refrigerant gasses (CFCs) in its operation, and as the evaporation of moisture into the air reduces the temperature – it filters the air through a damp pad to remove airborne contaminants.

With the ColdAIR evaporative cooling system from AmbiRad, Cosworth can benefit from a cooling system that is environmentally friendly and great value for money.
