Paragon Software Systems has won a contract to provide its advanced routing and scheduling system to Scottish Water. The major water utility that serves the whole of Scotland – and has more than 5 million customers in 2.4 million households – will use the logistics software to enhance its waste management services, which includes sludge and private septic-tank waste disposal. The transport optimisation system will help to improve the management of the fleet of 59 specialist waste management vehicles, which includes a broad range of vehicles.

Scottish Water’s waste management service is a complex operation. Vehicles are multi-shifted and the business operates a mixture of driver shift patterns, including seven days on, seven days off and four days on, four days off, to maximise service. The investment in the Paragon system, which includes Paragon Integrated Fleets, Fastnet, Multi Period Planner and street-level mapping for Scotland, will enable Scottish Water to review work allocation to shifts and treatment centres, together with planning daily service activity. The software will also enable the water company to calculate operational costs and help guide its decision making across the waste management operation.

Paragon Software was selected to provide logistics and routing optimisation for Scottish Water’s future tankering needs. “Its involvement with many companies in multiple sectors and utilities makes it a natural choice for Scottish Water. The new tool improves the way that sludge tanker movements are planned and optimises them based on a range of parameters including cost, disposal options, vehicle usage and driver work patterns. We constantly aim to improve external and internal customer satisfaction, which is already very high, and we anticipate that the Paragon system will assist in improving this,” says Brendon Williams, Waste Management Team Leader, Scottish Water.
