Protective packaging experts, Ranpak, have recently completed upgrades to their fully automated void detection system, Accufill.

Ranpak’s first Accufill system was installed in 2009. This represented a major change to the way protective packaging was used in large warehouse environments. Over the last 4 years, many more systems have been installed across Europe, and the trend looks set to increase, particularly in the ecommerce, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and 3PL industries.

The Accufill system is the only system to take packer judgement out of the equation. The Accufill works with the end-of-line FillPak system, to fill voids in boxes on high volume packing lines. Before reaching the FillPak paper dispenser, the open box is passed under the Accufill scanner, which quickly calculates the amount of free space in the box, and communicates with the FillPak system how much void fill paper to dispense in order to most effectively fill that void.

The changes in the upgraded system include updates to the control system and installation of new software. As a result, the improvements are:

• reliability

• even faster throughput

• fill factor by box size

As such the packer can focus completely on filling the box, resulting in time and cost savings. In comparison with using only the standard FillPak unit, material savings of up to 15% can be made.

The additional benefit is that every scan is recorded and a data management report can be produced to allow warehouse and logistics managers to evaluate exactly how much material they are using on each packaging line.

Ranpak expects the new generation Accufill to be on the market by early 2013.
