All Ecotronic lighting products are specifically designed to provide innovative, energy efficient, solutions. Ecotronic’s extensive range of EcoSTAR® LED and EcoBAY® T5, high bay and low bay luminaires, are specifically designed to replace inefficient sodium, mercury, or metal halide discharge lighting; commonly found in warehousing and manufacturing facilities.

Ricoh is a global provider of office technology such as printers, copiers and fax machines. Its main production facility in Priorslee, Telford handles raw materials and finished products such as toner ink. Ecotronic was contracted by Ricoh to revolutionise the lighting systems in the toner warehouse.

The Problem: Fire and Explosion Risk

Primarily existing lighting was being replaced as part of an overall energy reduction strategy, but the secondary reasons were far more compelling. The company’s insurance assessor had recommended that their sodium lamps were replaced as there had been several fire alarm incidents that were caused by the 25+ year old ballast units breaking down. The new lighting system was installed in order to increase visibility and to reduce the risk of fires and explosions.

“The main problems with sodium fittings within our facility were lack of control and poor visibility. Many areas and racking aisles can remain unused for several hours. The sodium lights cannot be dimmed or automatically switched off due to the long lamp warm up periods required. This combined with a regular failure to switch off lighting when the area is unoccupied resulted in significantly increased electricity consumption,” says Andy Smith of Ricoh.

The Solution: EcoBAY® & EcoSTAR® LED

The the toner warehouse was fitted with EcoBAY 2 x 80watt auto sensing fixtures which improved the quality of lighting and the working environment for Ricoh employees.

The Results: Increased Energy Efficiency

“Lighting within the area has improved significantly. The white fluorescent & LED light is close to daylight colour temperature and has eliminated the dark and gloomy feel that existed within the area. With staff stating that the area feels much brighter and cleaner under the ‘white’ light” says Smith.

The latest projects has seen the re-fit of the mould shop and further storage areas. New EcoSTAR® 13200 lumen LED lo-bay units fitted. Toner dust and ingress protection was also major concern, hence their selection of the EcoSTAR® LED IP65 system. Key features include a durable rubber gasket, sealed with heavy duty stainless toggle catches, to provide longevity of service life & ease of access.

The new installation saved 157,044 KWHR, 84 tonnes of CO2 and £13,907 per annum.
