…I knew I could make money by selling my waste, my packaging materials in particular, to specialists who can then process and re-use it. But to maximise the benefit to my business how could I keep material streams such as card and plastic film separate.

Like most logistics companies packages and parcels come through our business on wooden pallets. Invariably they’re packed in bulk cardboard boxes pending smaller end customer shipment, and the entire consignment is sheathed in pallet-wrap film for security.

We have no problem selling off any unused pallets but until very recently everything else went into a compactor skip and thereafter to landfill. Not great for the environment, nor our ‘green credentials, and paying our waste contractor to take this material away wasn’t helping our bottom line.

With clean, dry cardboard currently being bought at ?£70/t and similar condition pallet-wrap film at ?£120/t here were at least two, hitherto lost, opportunities to recoup some valuable revenue ready and waiting.

What we needed was a method of collecting these materials that would:

• be easy for our staff to use

• maintain segregation

• retain cleanliness

• be dry

• be economic to run.

I was discussing the issue with the rep from BritishBins recently (Incidentally – A great source for a whole host of bins and waste containers !) and he introduced me to the Knapzak system. It’s in widespread use across the Europe with such household names as Sita, Veolia & Ikea, BritishBins are now distributing Knapzak across the UK.

Knapzaks strength lies in its simplicity. A metal frame (Knapholder), stove enamelled or galvanised, in capacities from 60lt through to 2,500lt – with 400lt being the most popular size – all furnished with a clear polymer sack (Knapzak).

The sack is translucent so operatives can clearly see which material a specific sack has been designated for, and they’re fully compatible with pallet-wrap film so, when filled, the entire bag can enter the reprocessing system without fear of contamination.

Staff have taken to Knapzak like ducks to water and the entire business is now constantly looking for new streams, of what would otherwise be waste material, to be recycled. We have 200lt Knapzaks in our offices and canteen, each for Aluminium (foil pie trays), PTFE (drink bottles) Almuminium (drink cans) and paper.

When the bags are filled they can be collected ‘as is’ by your recycling contractor or, thanks to the micro perforations releasing any trapped air, quickly compacted for more efficient transport.
