Convenience food manufacturer Symington’s, which makes some of the UK’s best-known grocery brands, has erected a new 3,000sqm temporary warehouse to help support its rapid growth strategy.

The Leeds-based firm has taken delivery of the warehouse from temporary building manufacturer, supplier and installer Spaciotempo UK at its head office, at Cross Green, just off the M1 motorway.

The company dates back to 1827 and produces instant soups, home baking kits and bread products, manufacturing under licence and for its own brands. Following a management buy-out this year, it is currently engaged in an ambitious expansion programme.

In the past year it has acquired the Ragu and Chicken Tonight cooking sauce brands and in June it bought fellow UK baking business Victoria Foods, which also supplies products under licence for Nestle and Weight Watchers.

Symington’s is one of Spaciotempo’s most loyal customers and its new building, which provides room for 2,700 pallets of finished goods, has been placed behind another temporary warehouse on its site.

Drawn from Spaciotempo’s TempAstor range, it has been fitted with radar speed doors, which open automatically when a forklift truck approaches, enabling fast and efficient access.

It took Spaciotempo a matter of weeks to erect the building and James Bridson, group warehouse and distribution manager for Symington’s, said that the ability to access extra storage space quickly on the same site makes installing temporary warehousing a key tactic during the expansion process.

He said: “Acquiring extra on-site temporary warehouse space is part of our growth strategy and it is an approach that is working out extremely well for us.

“We have room to spare in our yard for one thing, so we are not facing extra transport costs for off-site storage, and we don’t have racking either, so it is a straightforward process to get a new building up and running.

“In the long term, we will look at more permanent warehousing, but for the moment, and while we continue to grow, Spaciotempo’s buildings are a perfect temporary fix.”

Scott Jameson, director of sales at Spaciotempo, said: “Our business is characterised by working with organisations whose fortunes are on the up and that is certainly the case with Symington’s, which has taken a number of buildings from us during a period of growth.

“We are delighted to have been able to provide another building within a timescale that the company was looking for in order to match its expansion plans.”
