Welcome to the July 1st Warehouse & Logistics News. Summer is the season for industry events. As we went to press we were all set for the FLTA Golf Day, with WLN fielding a team and providing refreshments. Now there are just a few days until the UKWA Annual Awards for Warehousing Luncheon 2012, and WLN is once again proud to be the event’s official media partner. Don’t miss our exclusive pullout preview supplement in this issue, published in conjunction with the United Kingdom Warehousing Association. The industry’s finest take their bows at the Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane, London on Wednesday July 4th, before 400 guests.

In this issue we have features on Warehouse Lighting, which looks at smart lighting solutions for today’s warehouses, including such technologies as LED, energy-efficient, long-life and sensor-activated system; Warehouse Automation, all about helping warehouses become more efficient through automation; and Cold Storage & Distribution, which covers the latest vehicles, equipment technology and services to help manufacturers and retailers keep their products at the correct temperature throughout the supply chain.

Medals are a big motivator for athletes as the London Olympics remind us, and this industry has its own glittering prizes for top performers, the UKWA’s, which are a key date in the industry year. The UKWA’s reward excellence in the third party logistics sector and this year they attracted an overwhelming number of entries from some of the most influential companies in the logistics and materials handling industry. There are eight categories of Awards open to UKWA members and suppliers to the 3PL sector. They include Young Employee of the Year, for under 25s not in a supervisory or managerial role; Environment, for the company showing the most significant and successful application of Green processes, procedures or monitoring; Team of The Year, for the company or depot demonstrating an outstanding team effort in their warehousing operations; Warehouse Manager of the Year; Training Achievement; Technology/ Innovation; Customer Service and Best New UKWA Member. A further trophy, the Chairman’s Award, will bepresented by UKWA Chairman John Maguire.

So, if you’re going to the UKWA’s, we’ll see you there! And after the UKWA Awards we’ll be first with the winners on our website www.warehousenews.co.uk, which is now averaging around 4,000 unique visitors per day. To find out who lifted the trophies, you know where to look.

Happy reading.
