NBM Distribution Limited is the UK’s leading supplier of products to data cabling installers, IT professionals and end-users across the UK and more recently the United Nations in several parts of the world.

The company operate out of office and warehouse facilities in Kings Langley, which store and distribute a range of data cabling products, however due to healthy business growth and expansion NBM have outgrown the existing warehouse site.

NBM selected Gideon Hillman Consulting to develop a strategy and support the implementation of the new warehouse and logistics operation. The logistics strategy to support the company growth was identified and agreed that the best option was to outsource the warehousing and order fulfilment operations.

As the nature of many of the products (specifically cable drums and reels) require specialist handling, racking/storage and cutting equipment within a suitable warehouse structure the design of the new facility and operational processes was as important as choosing the right outsourced logistics provider.

“We chose the Gideon Hillman Consulting team to work with us based on their reputation and proven track record in warehouse design and logistics operation optimisation” commented Danny Kindell, Managing Director, “they understood our three year growth plan, the need to find a suitable third party to work alongside, as well as designing a distribution centre that ‘ticked the boxes’ for our specialist needs.”

The consulting team firstly established the baseline metrics of the current operation to provide a benchmark against each optimised solution to be considered. Using supporting data the team then modelled a full scope of the required outsourced operation and the suitability of the proposed location, reflecting the three year plan, into a warehouse planning profile. The Gideon Hillman Consulting team then worked to provide detailed CAD drawings, bill of equipment for MHE requirements, along with SOPs, WMS functionality requirements and a costed implementation plan for the proposed facility move.

“The team gave us detailed CAD design options for cable reel racking, high level shelving and work stations, whilst designing the layout of the warehouse to incorporate cable cutting machines and accessibility for quicker and more efficient picking and packing” commented Danny Kindell “The scope of the optimisation enabled us to have a more cost effective and robust approach to our current operation and our three year growth plan.”
