The Premier Foods sauces production facility at Bury St Edmunds has recently commissioned a major upgrade for improved efficiencies and capacity on a key brand within its portfolio.

The Loyd Grosman line has been re-equipped with a number of installations including the latest end of line robotic palletising system from SCM Handling/Kuka robotics.

The robot cell built and tested at SCM in Taunton, Somerset utilises the high performance proven palletising KR180 robot from Kuka alongside custom built product handling and empty/full pallet handling systems within  a self-contained cell configuration.

The robot with its 180KG payload capacity handles 3 sizes of sauce jars in shrink-wrapped formations at up to 50 trays per minute and palletises onto GKN or Euro pallets.

“The production project team at Premier Bury laid down some interesting and challenging criteria in respect to robot cell performance and testing as well as lead times and product commissioning” said  Sales Director Daniel Lambie at SCM.

“As an affiliate to KUKA UK we were able to offer the crucial element of working in conjunction with Europe’s largest robot supplier closely allied to ourselves as an “in house integrator” with full control over all aspects of the manufacturing & testing process in order we could meet the exacting demands set out by Premier Foods”.

“The line is now fully operational and providing Premier Foods with the planned efficiencies and extra production capacity.”  He added.

Stephen Ward Projects Manager at Premier commented “We were looking for a reduced footprint, something innovative, and adaptable to handle a range of products that we wished to palletise. The SCM/ KUKA system has provided a simple setup to manage and keep clean, for operators to run and engineers to maintain. As a first installation of its type on site, it has been a success, removing an existing packing bottle neck and providing a platform for future improvements.”
