Three contracts totalling £500,000 completed by Pro-Dek Storage Systems have provided nearly seven miles of storage as part of a major expansion programme by Righton Ltd, the UK’s leading independent metal and plastics stockholder.

Since its formation in the last century Righton has developed into one of the UK’s leading suppliers of aluminium, stainless steel, industrial plastics and special alloys. Eight service centres with over 30,000m² of warehousing, located throughout the country, stock more than 10,000 standard items at a time, as well as an extensive range of non-standard items. A computerised stock location system allows orders to be processed for next-day delivery from over 6000 tonnes of material.

Following the successful completion of several previous contracts, Pro-Dek was appointed to provide a wide variety of cantilever racking, shelving, mezzanine flooring and parts storage at new premises near Manchester and Glasgow and an existing warehouse in Birmingham with a total floor area of 10,000m². Righton is a long-standing materials supplier for Ministry of Defence projects, and these installations enable the company to stock the large quantities of materials and components required for the two 65,000-tonne Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers now being built for the Royal Navy.

All three projects were completed in two phases, with cantilever and pallet racking being installed in the first phases, followed by mezzanine floors and long-span shelving for storing components and fittings in phase two. The cantilever racking is Pro-Dek’s heavy-duty Pro-Bolt system up to seven metres high, designed to make maximum use of building heights, and with arm lengths of 1000mm, 1250mm, 1500mm and 2100mm. Up to 13 storage levels were provided to allow for the wide variety of product to be stocked. Arms are adjustable in 150mm increments to allow for changes in product dimensions.

At the customer’s request Pro-Dek used some existing cantilever racking for these projects, following assessment for suitability and refurbishment as required, and also installed lateral beams in some locations to allow for pallet storage. The cantilever racking included both standard and narrow aisles. In the case of the narrow-aisle sections, floor-fixed guide rails were fitted to prevent damage.

Like the cantilever racking, the pallet racking was also provided with a variety of storage depths and entry widths to suit different product dimensions.

Mezzanine floors and heavy-duty shelving were installed by Pro-Dek at the three locations to provide storage for components, fittings and fasteners. At Manchester the contract involved building partly over existing offices in order to maximise storage capacity. Beneath the three mezzanines heavy-duty long-span shelving, close-boarded with timber and rated at 800kg per shelf, was installed for large, heavy items, while on the upper levels smaller components and fittings are stored on medium-specification shelving with galvanised steel mesh enclosures that form individual compartments for efficient stock control.
