Welcome to the April 1st Warehouse & Logistics News. It’s not just the daffodils by the roadside that tell you winter is over. Now the financial bigwigs are saying the same thing. Christine Lagarde, the International Monetary Fund supremo, recently said economic spring is in the air following Greece‘s recent sovereign debt restructuring, which has lifted a weight off Europe and the world’s economic and financial situation. Which means renewed economic confidence in our industry too.

IMPORTANT – if you’re reading this on April Fools Day, April 1st, remember, April Fools Day windups are only valid until 12 noon. After that you have to treat all dubious sounding information or advice from colleagues and other sources as genuine. Except for reports about snowfalls blocking roads and motorways. Given our wonderful climate, they could well be true.

As always we’ve got some completely factual features for you in this issue. The Loading Bay includes industrial doors, dock levelers and dock lifts. Our latest Fork Trucks feature takes a look at all things fork truck, including counterbalance trucks (electric and diesel), side loaders, VNA, reach trucks and other specialist machines. And Storage Solutions is an overview of ways to maximise the efficient use of space in the warehouse with the latest storage solutions including pallet racking, cantilever racking, shelving and all other applications.

It would be a very dull industry that didn’t have any interesting characters working in it. Our Quote Unquote series, which you can find at the back of this issue, is dedicated to encouraging people in the industry to raise a smile by answering a few light hearted questions about themselves. In this issue we feature Derek Kay, Business Development Director at Logistex. Derek definitely gets into the spirit. His answer to “What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you at work?” is “Getting caught learning to rollerblade on a newly laid warehouse floor at a site we were commissioning when I was a software engineer.” Happy days.

Finally, if you want to go to the cinema and see Hollywood’s idea of warehousing and logistics – don’t laugh: we understand there are plenty of people in the industry who like to do this kind of thing – the new Mark Wahlberg/Kate Beckinsale movie Contraband promises plenty of action scenes set in warehouses and detailed materials handling footage.

Have a relaxing Easter break.
