Union Industries, the UK market leading manufacturer of industrial rapid roll Hi-Speed Doors, has helped historic family food business Bennett Opie enhance its commitment to safety and security with the installation of a new Ramdoor.
The Leeds-based manufacturer has installed the heavy duty Ramdoor in the main warehouse area of Bennett Opie’s large production and distribution centre in Sittingbourne, Kent.
Renowned for its world-famous pickled walnuts, Bennett Opie has been supplying quality food to British families since 1880. It also produces a range of cocktail cherries, luxury bottled fruit and a selection of pickles. The company is also the UK importer for Monin Syrups, Coco Lopez cream of coconut and Clement Faugier Chesnuts, as well as sole importers of ethnic products such as Ferns Indian pickles and Linghams Malaysian chilli sauces.
With so many products going through the manufacturing and distribution process, the main warehouse is one of Bennett Opie’s busiest areas, with continual access required in and out of the building by fork lift vehicles.
Previously the company used uPVC strip curtains to cover the main warehouse doorway, which proved to be inefficient and impractical, and the only real solution was to install a Union door. Through its fast opening and closing speeds, Union’s rapid action door now ensures that Bennett Opie can maintain a consistent temperature within the building by protecting the interior from the elements, at the same time assisting in improving the hygiene standards on site.
Security has also been increased following the installation of the Ramdoor as the door is activated by radio control transmitters which are issued to certain Bennett Opie staff only. This totally eliminates the chance of unauthorised access into the warehouse area.
In common with the other doors in the range, the Ramdoor also feature Union’s highly-regarded ‘Crash-Out’ damage protection facility, which ensures that the door remains operable if the heavy duty steel composite bottom beam is hit by a speeding vehicle.
This proven system, which has been a central attribute of Union’s doors for over 20 years, drastically reduces repair costs and guarantees minimal down-time if the door is impacted by traffic such as forklift trucks.
James Jennings, Maintenance Manager from Bennett Opie, said: “We have been very impressed with the Ramdoor and the benefits it has given to warehouse area. We are always looking at ways of enhancing our operations & productivity and Union’s high speed door offered the ideal solution helping maintain a consistent flow of traffic in and out of the building as well as supporting our environmental commitment by preventing heat loss.”
Gary Bareham, Sales Engineer at Union Industries, said: “Our range of industrial hi-speed roller doors has gained an exceptional reputation in the food production and distribution sectors. In addition to benefiting from their low maintenance requirements, companies like Bennett Opie are using the doors as part of the health and safety and food hygiene infrastructures.”
