Specially modified Flexigrid matting, manufactured by Plastic Extruders Ltd, is helping to provide an anti-fatigue and hygienic surface for fresh fruit importer and packer Griffin & Brand.

This long established supplier to major supermarkets had a problem with grapes falling onto the floor, being squashed and causing a slip hazard. This was originally solved with wooden duckboards which allowed the grapes to fall through the gaps. When the duckboards needed to be replaced, the company wanted a better alternative which would be more hygienic and easier to move for cleaning.

After a detailed look at the problem, Plastic Extruders offered a solution based on a specially-modified version of its well-known slip resistant Flexigrid matting. By fabricating the matting with larger gaps in the grid, the grapes were encouraged to fall through the surface and could be easily cleaned up at the end of the day.

Flexigrid is specially designed for harsh and demanding environments to provide safety and comfort underfoot and to minimise the risk of slipping and tripping. The high performance matting has a deeply etched surface which will resist dirt, grease, grime, production waste and spillages from oils or other liquids. It has R11 rated slip resistance and efficiently drains and dissipates spills, meeting the highest possible V10 rating for liquid drainage.

The matting is manufactured in black 5m and 10m rolls, 60 and 91cm wide, and also in modules of various sizes together with optional aluminium chamfered edges. Information and matting samples are available from Plastic Extruders Ltd.
