Welcome to the 1 June Warehouse & Logistics News. Life remains tough out there for business people, but at least the latest figures look a bit more hopeful. As we went to press, the ONS reported the UK economy grew 0.5% in the first quarter of 2011 and unemployment shrank 36,000, the second successive quarterly drop. Working days lost through disputes in the year to March were the joint lowest total since records began in 1930. The Work Foundation no less called the growth in full-time jobs especially encouraging, and a key indicator of a sustainable recovery. Here’s to that!

Meanwhile life in the warehouse and logistics sector goes on, and WLN is here to help you make the best of it. In our scheduled features, we cover Fork Trucks, Buildings/Facilities and The Loading Bay, each one a crucial aspect of modern warehousing and logistics operations. Our Forklifts feature includes counterbalance trucks, electric and diesel, side loaders, VNA trucks, reach trucks and other specialist machines. Buildings/Facilities covers main structures and key equipment including temporary structures, and The Loading Bay includes industrial doors, dock levelers and dock lifts.

As part of our Fork Trucks feature we have an exclusive interview with Danny McAllister, General Manager of TVH UK & Ireland. In a UK forklift marketplace led by OEMs and distributors, TVH are forthright about being pure parts specialists and not providing servicing, repair or rental.

With headquarters in Belgium and UK offices in Coventry, TVH has made its name since 1969 as the leading independent company in replacement parts for material handling, access equipment and in-plant industrial vehicles. Up to the end of 2010 TVH’s business was called TVH Forklift, denoting its previous focus. Now renamed TVH Parts, its scope has widened to include access equipment within the unique TVH ‘All Makes’ programme.

As regular readers know, Warehouse & Logistics News is proud to be Media Partner to the RTITB Fork Lift Operator of the Year Competition. In this issue, we’ve got a report on the results of the Scottish National Final, held in Glasgow on Wednesday 4th May, hosted by GTG Training. Robert Watson, who comes from Ayrshire and works for bpi.visqueen, part of British Polythene Industries, was crowned Scottish National Champion. Now Robert will go forward to the Grand Final on Friday 16th September and compete for the chance to be RTITB Operator of the Year 2011.
