SDI Group has completed a warehousing solution for GSI Commerce, which has increased capacity at the company’s distribution centre in Oldham by 30 per cent. The project has involved the installation of a two-tier mezzanine extension to an existing single-tier structure that provides 4,100 sq m of additional storage space.
GSI Commerce, an e-commerce and multichannel solutions provider, needed to expand its warehousing capability to handle recent business growth. The new solution will store a diverse range of toys and fashion products on behalf of customers including Mothercare, Early Learning Centre, Peacock’s and Reiss, using a manual picking operation to assemble orders for onward delivery to online shoppers.
The mezzanine structure will be used to store items either on pallets or within shelving that has been designed to maximise the available floor space. The solution incorporates an inbound and outbound conveyor system to transport cartons and totes between all three floors, whilst wired pallet gates will enable the movement of pallets between each level.
SDI Group has also provided mechanical and electrical services including the installation of sprinklers, fire and smoke detection systems, standard and emergency lighting and power sockets. In addition, the company will extend an existing maintenance contract to include two full-time engineers at the site.
